I just don't want to believe people can be that mean to a nine-year-old. But clearly they can. <br /><br />There's an autobiographical film by Zeffirelli. In it he's about six years old. Zeffirelli was born out of wedlock. So at one point his stepmother corners him and confronts him with expressions of the utmost malevolence, calling him "bastardo!" It's a horrifying scene of emotional abuse. Your experience reminds me of it. <br /><br />70,000 years isn't all that long ago. Even written history goes back 5,000. Humans may be to some extent intrinsically tribal; but I recently read that the ideology of race as we know it was deliberately constructed during a 200 year period, starting from the time of Columbus, for imperialist and colonialist purposes. So hopefully there's a chance that as history develops in other directions, this particular piece of nastiness may eventually fade away.
