I fancy Marxism is basically a religion, with the Dictatorship of the Proletariat in place of The Second Coming and dialectical materialism instead of the Holy Ghost. It doesn't question the premises of industrialism and says nothing about resource depletion, overpopulation or environmental degradation, that I have ever heard of - and these are the greatest crises of our time. I don't know what's going to displace capitalism, which is clearly on its way out and was always a bad idea anyway, but I doubt that Marx can provide a resolution to our problems.
I do like the idea of the seed of the new society taking root in the shell of the old; the Wobblies did too. That's probably how new civilizations arise out of a Dark age, which is plainly our destination. The usual development at that point is generally some kind of feudalism- not very attractive, but probably better than the Khmer Rouge.
