I've been reading Walt Whitman's writings about the lead up to the first Civil War. How gradual it all was. The debate, and strong comments from everyday people he knew about what might happen, and the news as it came in.
It rather feels like the here, and now.
Interesting as Whitman described it. When the cannons did let loose on Fort Sumter many felt a strange relief that the long painful prologue had finally ended. That the true Event was at last on.
