"Before the Blood..."

Above is a young revolutionary militia women in the first days of the Spanish Civil War. The early days of Revolution are the sweetest.  The brightest. This before the blood, and betrayal.

  1. So brimming with confidence. I wonder if she survived the war.

  2. I felt the same way when I saw her. We can only hope she lived, and her grandson or great grandson is a progressive Minister somewhere in the current Spanish government. Well that or cool artist asleep under a palm tree in the South Pacific.

  3. Well if he's under a coconut palm he better wake up! Getting brained by those things is a major hazard in the islands, I'm told.

Other tropical trees are evidently also hazardous, but in different ways. I once watched a youtube vid of a French Buddhist monk giving a talk. Once, in Tahiti, he found himself resting in the shade of a tree that seem to precipitate its own cooling mist. It's very hot in Tahiti, so he really enjoyed this built-in air conditioning. Then someone told him that the tree was full of flies. The flies were pissing. It was a pissing tree. "My perception of reality changed instantly..."

  4. Getting back to Barcelona. You know they just held, or are trying to hold, a referendum in Catalonia for independence from Spain? It is not being well received in Madrid. Franco must be turning in his grave, which is always a good thing. But the woman in the photo would probably be pleased, I fancy.

  5. Pleased indeed.

If the Democracies had supported the Spanish Republic history would have been different. Hitler might have been more cautious. Certainly would have been blown to Hell earlier by an aware, and aroused west.

As for Catalonia it would have been celebrating it 70th anniversary of Independence. If the Republic survived.

    History is such a bitch.

So many places it could have turned for the good...but didn't.

The Democracies left Spain to her fate did nothing while Hitler had his first victories. Nearly went belly up under the Blitzkrieg. The Brits held on by a whisker. While the damned Russian were making nice with Berlin. ...they paid dear for that later.

Anyway good thing we were around huh?
